COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA (DOMINICA)

The Commonwealth of Dominica an island in the Caribbean Sea, is Located between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, with Guadeloupe in the north and Martinique in the south and Barbados far east of her.

Dominica is a small but verdantly pure, has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" due to her unspoilt beauty. The exceptional natural beauty of the island was recognised  in 1998 when the Morne Trois Pitons National Park was made a UNESCO  World Heritage Site.

Her towering mountains embraces the universe, within her embrace are numerous hot springs, leafy terrain and the second largest boiling lake in the world, she is home of many rare plant, animal and bird species.

However, less-developed to her neighbouring islands Dominica is approximately 30 miles long and 15 miles wide with a population of 71.700.

Dominica is home to a wide range of people, including the indigenous people of the island, the Caribs who live on a 3,700 acre territory at the east coast side of the island. They elect their own chief. This mix of cultures is important to Dominica..  Whose official language is English - though a French creole is commonly spoken.
The Sisserou parrot which is the island's national bird, is featured on the national flag.
Tourism
Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on both tourism and agriculture.  Unlike many other Caribbean islands, Dominica's tourism is underdeveloped. It does not have any world-famous chains of hotels it specialises in family run hotels.

Dominica encourages Eco Tourism and has its own unique famous tourist spots, such as the Emerald Pool, the Indian River in Portsmouth, Scotts Head where the Atlantic Ocean meets with the Caribbean Sea,Trafalgar Falls, and the world's largest Boiling Lake which is inside of Morne Trois Pitons National Park - Dominica's World Heritage site.

On the island there are many excellent diving spots due to its steep drop-offs, healthy marine environment and reefs.

Because of Dominica's continuous natural beauty,  Dominica was chosen to be the locations for the film "The Orchid House"  and most recently "Pirates of the Caribbean -Dead Man's Chest"  and its follow-up one of today's bilion dollar film.  The most famous sites selected for filming were the Indian River, Hampstead Beach, Londonderry River and Vieille Case, which is situated on the island’s northern tip and Soufriere at southern tip a boost for Dominica's economy.
